Community Ed. has a need each year for new basketball referees. It’s not clear at this time how many new referees we will need. Candidates must attend a mandatory meeting/training sessions, even if you are a returning referee. No referee will be scheduled to work without completing proper employment paperwork.

Referees are scheduled to work between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm on Saturdays from 12/8 through 3/16. Some accommodations can be made due to school team or ComEd team practices & games, family obligations, etc.

Please note: Due to child labor regulations, students must be 14 by November 1, 2018, to participate.

Student Referee Training Dates:

There will be 4 ref clinics this year to provide some extra pre-season training. There will be 2 paperwork, logistics, & basic instruction sessions. All training sessions will be held in the High School Lower Gym. The first on Sunday, October 28 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm, and the second on Saturday, November 3 also 10:00 am-12:00 pm. Referees are required to be at (at least) 1 of these sessions.

There will also be 2 all-training sessions. The first on Monday, November 12 (Veterans Day) from 7:00-9:00 pm, and the second on  Tuesday, November 13 also 7:00-9:00 pm. Referees are required to be at (at least) 1 of these sessions.

Adults: If you are interested in joining our team of adult referees, please email Luanne Flood at lflood@abschools.org and she’ll put you in touch with Chris Berlied.

The Boys High School league is in need of one or two additional league directors. The hope is to have a parent of a rising freshman or sophomore who will help until the student’s senior year.  The BHS league has 4-6 directors running the program each year so you would become part of that larger group. Please Contact Luanne Flood if interested.

Game Schedule:

Most leagues will have instructional clinics or scrimmage games on Saturday December 8th & 15th. Final schedules will be posted on our website. League games will begin Saturday January 5 and end on March 16 for most leagues, Sunday March 17th for boys high school. No games will be scheduled for Saturday, February 23.

Who Can Participate: This recreational league is open to Acton & Boxborough boys and girls in grades 3-12. Any players (boys or girls) who are on Travel or School teams will not be able to participate in the Community Ed. League. Parents can register and will receive 90% refunds if their children later make these more competitive teams. All participants will have an equal opportunity to play and will be placed on teams to achieve balanced competition. Once teams are formed, coaches will contact players.

When: Practices will begin in mid-December. Each team has one practice during the week with games being played on Saturday. The Saturday game schedule will change each week. The game schedule is listed on the following page.

Mandatory League Clinics:
All participants are required to attend the opening clinics in November and December (see schedule on the next page) at the times and locations listed. Exact times will be posted on our website in early November. The clinics allow the coaches and directors to evaluate the ability of players as all participants in our league have an equal opportunity to play and are placed on teams to achieve balanced competition. This is difficult at best if coaches and directors don’t have the opportunity to evaluate your child. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and sneakers.

Coaches & League Directors: In order for the league to run smoothly, volunteers are needed to serve as league directors and team coaches. Final selection of coaches will be at the discretion of the league director. League Directors’ children play at no cost. Specific leagues in need of directors are listed on our website. If you are interested in serving as a league director or coach, please follow the link on our website under the basketball tab to the director or coaching volunteer forms.

Student Coaches:  High School students in 11th or 12th grade are eligible to coach one team with parent supervision. Anyone interested must go to the basketball tab on our website and fill out the student coaching form. No phone calls or walk-ins, please. Student coaches will be selected by league directors. Student coaches may not have a partner who is a high school or club teammate for any sport playing during our basketball season. We have found this to be a problem when both students have to miss due to their sport’s practice or game.

Registration Process: Registration is currently available through our online registration system. The cost of the basketball program is $159 per student. Once a league is full, players will be placed on a waitlist in the order in which their registration is received.

Refund Policy: To receive a 90% refund, players must withdraw from the league no later than two full business days before their league’s clinic date. Community Ed. will not provide refunds after these dates unless a player makes a Travel or School team.  Students making school teams will be given a 90% refund.
